Dow recently stated at an industry forum that the commercialization of solid-state batteries faces material-level challenges, including insufficient flexibility of solid electrolytes and volume expansion/contraction of active materials during charge-discharge cycles. Although solid-state batteries are expected to find initial applications in low-altitude aircraft and robotics, these issues hinder their large-scale mass production. For solid-state pouch cells, Dow has developed an adhesive that maintains stability across a wide temperature range from -40°C to 120°C, offering both strength and flexibility. For cylindrical cells, the company provides multiple potting solutions, including polyurethane foam potting compounds. Additionally, Dow supplies functional materials such as binders and performance-enhancing additives at the cell level. The company emphasized that its technology roadmap focuses on "lightweighting," "reliability," and "performance enhancement," and believes that materials are a critical factor influencing the pace of solid-state battery mass production.
