BYD unveiled its plug-in hybrid compact car, the Dolphin G DM-i, for the European market for the first time on May 26 local time. The model is scheduled to launch in Europe in late summer this year and will make its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. Measuring 4.16 meters in length and 1.825 meters in width, the Dolphin G DM-i is shorter but wider than BYD’s existing all-electric Dolphin EV. It features BYD’s latest DM-i plug-in hybrid system, comprising a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a front-mounted electric motor, and BYD’s proprietary “Blade Battery,” delivering a combined driving range of up to 1,000 kilometers. BYD has not yet disclosed the battery capacity or all-electric range figures, only stating that the vehicle combines the zero-emission benefits of a pure electric car with the long-distance flexibility of a hybrid. Li Ke, Executive Vice President of BYD, previously stated at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit that the Dolphin G is BYD’s first model fully designed specifically for European and overseas markets, as Chinese consumers have shown little interest in such compact plug-in hybrids. She noted that differences between Chinese and European market demands are becoming increasingly pronounced, with European urban road conditions leading local consumers to favor smaller vehicles. Over the next three years, BYD plans to introduce more models developed specifically based on European aesthetics and requirements, moving away from designs tailored to Chinese tastes. BYD’s first European vehicle manufacturing plant in Hungary, along with its supporting supply chain, is nearing completion. Additionally, the company has established an R&D center in Budapest dedicated to developing models for the European market. Although BYD continues to advance its regionalized product strategy, certain components will still be shared across models sold in different markets. The Dolphin G DM-i will roll out across European markets in the coming weeks, with customer deliveries beginning by late summer. Detailed specifications will be announced prior to its official launch.
