Rivian’s head of software, Wassim Bensaid, stated that as AI technology advances, vehicles are shifting from being "software-defined" to "AI-defined," rendering debates over integrating Apple CarPlay increasingly outdated. He believes deeply integrated in-car AI will transform how users interact with applications, enabling the system to directly understand and execute tasks without requiring users to open specific apps. Bensaid noted that screen-mirroring solutions like CarPlay take over all in-vehicle displays, which contradicts Rivian’s vision of owning the central infotainment experience and delivering a unified service encompassing navigation, vehicle controls, entertainment, and an AI assistant. Citing internal survey data, he said that five years ago, CarPlay was among users’ top priorities; during the initial rollout of the R1T and R1S, over 70% of customers requested CarPlay support. However, the latest survey shows that figure has now dropped to less than 25%.
