Tesla has recently launched a promotional campaign in the Japanese market, offering customers who order a Model 3 or Model Y by July 31 three years of free Supercharging service. The Model 3 currently starts at ¥5,313,000 in Japan, while the Model Y starts at ¥5,587,000. Buyers can benefit from the Japanese government’s Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) subsidy of ¥1,270,000, and in certain areas of Tokyo, they may receive an additional local subsidy ranging from ¥800,000 to ¥1,000,000—bringing the Model 3’s effective starting price down to as low as ¥3,043,000. By April 2026, Tesla plans to operate over 1,000 Superchargers across 146 locations in Japan. As of now, 726 Superchargers have already been deployed, spanning from Hokkaido to Okinawa. The Japanese import car market has long been dominated by German luxury brands: in 2025, Mercedes-Benz led sales with nearly 51,000 units, followed by BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi. Although automakers such as Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, and BYD have introduced electric vehicles (EVs) in Japan, overall EV adoption in the country remains relatively low. Fuel price volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could prompt more Japanese consumers to switch to electric vehicles.
