At the 2026 Future Mobility Pioneers Conference, Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the Passenger Car Association (CPCA), forecast that China’s annual vehicle sales could reach 40 million units in the near term and potentially climb to 50 million units in the long run, capturing over 50% of the global market share. Data shows that China’s share of the global automotive market has already risen from 33.8% in 2023 to 34.2% in 2024, and is projected to further increase to 35.4% in 2025. Cui noted that automobiles are transitioning from traditional means of transportation into intelligent platforms and mass-market durable electronic consumer goods. He emphasized that for global auto sales to surpass 100 million units, the key lies in reducing costs and achieving economies of scale. He also stated that as technological innovation becomes the core competitive advantage, the conventional notion of luxury vehicles will be redefined—luxury attributes will increasingly be determined by technology rather than brand heritage or price. According to forecasts, China’s passenger vehicle retail sales in 2026 will reach approximately 24 million units, up 1% year-over-year, with new energy passenger vehicle sales accounting for about 14.6 million units—a 13% year-over-year increase—and a penetration rate of 61%. The industry must shift its focus from price competition toward technological innovation and global expansion.
