Driven by rising international energy prices, demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs) has surged rapidly across many countries worldwide. Leveraging technological and cost advantages, Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) have made significant inroads into multiple overseas markets. In February this year, Chinese-made vehicles surpassed Japanese brands in terms of arrivals in Australia for the first time, ending Japan’s 28-year dominance in the local market. Chinese EV brands have now become a dominant force in Australia. A similar trend is unfolding in South Korea. According to data from the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), Chinese-made vehicles ranked third among newly registered imported cars in April 2024, with 2,023 units registered—marking the first time they outpaced Japanese-made vehicles. Notably, China’s tally in South Korean statistics includes only BYD, whereas Japanese vehicles encompass Lexus (1,079 units), Toyota (829 units), and Honda (66 units). Meanwhile, China’s overall vehicle exports continued robust growth. Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that in April 2024, China exported 901,000 vehicles, up 3% month-on-month and a remarkable 74.4% year-on-year. From January to April 2024, cumulative vehicle exports reached 3.127 million units, an increase of 61.5% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, Chinese electric vehicles have achieved a historic breakthrough in the European market and are gaining significant attention from consumers and social media users in the United States.
