Ferrari Unveils First EV, the Luce, Rejects Advanced ADAS Amid Electrification Challenges

Ferrari has unveiled its first all-electric road car, the Luce, co-developed with former members of Apple’s design team and capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds. The company emphasized that electrification represents a new avenue for pushing performance boundaries—not a replacement for internal combustion engines. At the same time, Ferrari explicitly stated it will not develop Level 3 or higher autonomous driving features. CEO Benedetto Vigna remarked that if owners cannot drive the car themselves, owning a Ferrari would lose its meaning. On the day of the Luce’s launch, Ferrari’s share price dropped by 8%, wiping out more than $5 billion in market value. The vehicle’s design and layout have sparked controversy, with some critics arguing it strays from Ferrari’s traditional brand identity—so much so that there have been calls to remove the iconic prancing horse emblem. Although Ferrari aims to attract younger customers through electrification (its current global customer base has an average age of 47, with 30% under 35), the Luce’s design feels disconnected from the brand’s heritage. In today’s market environment, ultra-luxury automakers are generally slowing their pace of electrification, yet Ferrari continues advancing its electric strategy. However, its refusal to adopt advanced driver-assistance systems creates tension with its ambition to build premium electric vehicles. Industry observers widely believe that intelligent driving capabilities are essential for EVs. Moreover, the Luce’s launch comes amid weak market demand and declining financial performance, adding further challenges to Ferrari’s transformation journey.
