The 2026 Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix took place on June 7, with 19-year-old Mercedes driver Antonelli starting from pole position and claiming victory, becoming the youngest champion in the race’s history. During the event, Li Ke, Vice President of BYD Company Limited, held separate meetings on June 7–8 local time with Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula One Management (FOM), and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), to explore in depth the possibility of BYD’s involvement in Formula 1. Li had previously stated publicly that BYD is interested in F1, noting that the energy, emotional connection, and cultural value embodied by F1 align well with the company’s strategic direction. She emphasized that as a technology leader, BYD aims to assess whether its technologies could support either the FIA or existing teams, thereby enhancing its global brand presence. Although BYD ceased production of pure internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles five years ago, Li clarified that the company has not entirely ruled out ICE technology, adding that F1’s current V6 hybrid power unit better matches BYD’s technological focus. She also noted that even with ICE usage, advanced materials science remains critical—a field where BYD holds a competitive edge. Additionally, Li met last week in Cannes with Christian Horner, former Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, to discuss potential collaboration opportunities. When asked whether Horner would be an ideal partner, she responded positively. Li further stated that compared to Formula E, F1 better suits BYD’s positioning for achieving its global ambitions. She revealed that discussions with both the FIA and FOM will continue, as both sides seek to better understand each other’s interests and potential avenues for cooperation. The Monaco Grand Prix itself was marked by dramatic setbacks: Red Bull driver Max Verstappen retired early due to a technical failure, while Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris also retired during the race. Following the event, Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship standings with 156 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton in second place with 90 points.
