Tesla Releases European FSD Safety Data: Crash Rates Drop 71.4%, Dutch Roads 3x Safer Than Human Driving

Tesla released safety performance data for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system in Europe on June 10. The data shows that the system performs well in handling Europe’s complex road environments and traffic regulations. The Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) granted FSD type approval in April, making it the first driver-assistance system authorized for use on public roads in Europe. In the Netherlands, vehicles equipped with FSD have experienced a 71.4% reduction in collision incidents compared to human-driven vehicles, demonstrating overall safety more than three times higher than that of human drivers—reaching 3.4 times higher on highways. The system has accumulated 16.6 million kilometers of driving without any collisions and significantly reduces abrupt maneuvers such as emergency braking, rapid acceleration, hard braking, and aggressive lane changes, thanks to its ability to anticipate other vehicles’ movements in advance. According to Tesla’s global Vehicle Safety Report for FSD-equipped vehicles, a serious collision occurs on average once every approximately 5.5 million miles driven with FSD engaged. In comparison, conventional human-driven vehicles in the U.S. experience a serious collision once every 660,000 miles, indicating FSD can be up to seven times safer than the average U.S. driver. Globally, FSD-enabled vehicles have now logged over 11 billion miles on public roads—a figure that continues to grow. Currently, only vehicles equipped with Tesla’s fourth-generation Autopilot hardware can access FSD in the Netherlands and other European markets, with the system locally adapted based on the V14 mainline software version. Tesla plans to launch an FSD V14 Lite version this summer, removing hardware restrictions and enabling older vehicle models to access the full V14 feature set. This data release coincides with FSD gradually receiving regulatory approvals across multiple European countries. Following the Netherlands, Denmark has become the latest EU member state to authorize FSD for public road use.
