BYD plans to build 300 flash charging stations, each with a capacity of 1,500 kW, across the UK by the end of 2025, and deploy approximately 3,000 similar units throughout Europe by 2027. These chargers will be prioritized for high-traffic areas and along motorways, aiming for one station every 50 kilometers. The flash chargers are compatible with all battery electric vehicles equipped with the standard CCS charging port, though only select BYD models featuring dual charging ports can achieve the maximum 1,500 kW charging rate. The first vehicle supporting this charging power is the Denza Z9 GT shooting brake, expected to launch in the UK in September 2024. The upcoming Denza B5 SUV and D9 MPV, both entering the European market afterward, will also support flash charging and feature BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery technology. Specific locations for the UK’s first batch of flash chargers have not yet been announced, but early Denza owners will receive 18 months of free charging. The flash chargers are powered by on-site batteries, which recharge overnight from the grid at off-peak electricity rates. According to BYD’s head for the UK and Ireland, the ideal pricing for flash charging services would be under 50 pence per kilowatt-hour. Additionally, BYD is in talks with several supermarket chains to install flash chargers in their parking lots. Currently, 30 to 40 dealerships in the UK already meet the necessary electrical infrastructure requirements and have begun applying for planning permissions.
