On June 11, 2024, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system received expanded approval in Europe, with Belgium becoming the fifth EU country to authorize its use on public roads. The Netherlands, Denmark, Lithuania, and Estonia had previously approved FSD. Annick De Ridder, Minister of Mobility for Belgium’s Flemish Region, spearheaded the approval process, resulting in formal authorization earlier than anticipated. Following approval, relevant documentation will be submitted to Belgium’s vehicle certification authority. Once the review is complete, Tesla will roll out FSD version 14—a region-specific variant tailored to European roads and regulations—to local vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4). To date, FSD has been approved in 13 countries and regions globally, covering approximately 6% of the world market and nearly a quarter of the global population. Recent approvals in Denmark and Belgium indicate that regulatory barriers in Europe are rapidly diminishing. Sweden is expanding its public FSD testing program, and Latvia is accelerating its approval process. If EU member states continue recognizing the approval standards set by the Dutch Vehicle Authority, the European Commission could issue a unified authorization ahead of schedule, enabling FSD to operate legally across the entire EU—potentially accelerating its regional rollout significantly beyond initial expectations.
