Since its launch, BYD's factory in Rayong Province, Thailand, has turned its blue work uniforms into a local status symbol—and even a form of "hard currency." Thai employees frequently request replacement uniforms due to high demand from friends and relatives, and some even cut out the "BYD"-branded labels from water barrels to decorate personal belongings. Locals take pride in displaying items bearing the BYD logo. Operators at the plant typically earn a monthly salary of RMB 4,000—30% higher than comparable positions in Bangkok—while skilled technical workers can earn up to RMB 6,000 per month. In addition to base pay, employees receive monthly performance bonuses, quarterly bonuses, year-end bonuses, double-time pay for weekend overtime, and triple-time pay for work on public holidays. They are also entitled to 15 days of paid annual leave, with unused days convertible into cash. Thanks to this competitive compensation and benefits package, along with management practices emphasizing cultural inclusivity and local talent development, BYD’s Rayong factory achieved an employee turnover rate below the industry average of 12% reported by Thai labor unions during its first year of operation. Today, BYD’s influence among local workers has grown significantly, with some employees likening its standing in Thailand to that of SK Hynix in South Korea.
