Although General Motors has shut down its subsidiary focused on autonomous ride-hailing services, it continues to advance the development of autonomous driving technology. Sterling Anderson, the company's Chief Product Officer, stated that the current R&D focus is on autonomous technology for passenger vehicles, which could eventually be applied to driverless ride-hailing services. GM is adopting a scenario-based deployment strategy, prioritizing the development of autonomous capabilities for long-distance highway driving before gradually expanding to arterial roads and urban core areas. Anderson noted that once the system achieves stable operation across a sufficient number of regions, launching a commercially viable autonomous taxi service will become feasible. He also expects that, ultimately, the operational environments for private passenger vehicles and autonomous taxis will fully converge.
