GM Launches Vehicle-to-Grid Tech: EVs Can Power the Grid

On June 15, General Motors unveiled a proposal to integrate its Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC electric vehicles (EVs) into the U.S. energy infrastructure through software updates and specialized hardware. The technology, known as vehicle-to-grid (V2G), enables EVs to feed electricity back into the grid during periods of peak demand. Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy, stated that over 250,000 GM EVs currently on U.S. roads already have bidirectional charging capability, with combined battery capacity sufficient to power approximately 120,000 households for one week. The technology could generate additional income for EV owners and help utilities ease grid strain. However, realizing vehicle-grid integration requires owners to install dedicated bidirectional charging equipment, which costs around $20,000 (excluding installation fees). Furthermore, inconsistent regulations and standards across U.S. utilities mean nationwide adoption would require coordination among thousands of organizations. GM has already partnered with Pacific Gas and Electric Company in California and DTE Energy in Michigan. Some EV owners, however, express concerns that frequently discharging their vehicle batteries to supply the grid could shorten battery lifespan.
