Li Auto released a comparison test video via its official mini-program, showcasing the performance of its Li L9 model equipped with an 800V split-type active suspension against NIO’s ES9 featuring a 48V integrated active suspension on a washboard road surface. The video showed the Li L9 maintaining a stable body posture, while the NIO ES9 exhibited noticeable swaying. In response, Ma Lin, Vice President of NIO, questioned the authenticity of the video, demanding that Li Auto disclose the suspension settings and test conditions used, and expressing suspicion that Li had adjusted relevant parameters to influence the outcome. Li Auto did not directly address the concerns about test parameters. Instead, it shifted focus to NIO’s previous claim that “48V suspension is a generation ahead of 800V,” sparking public debate. From a technical standpoint, the 800V split-type system relies on a high-voltage battery to drive hydraulic pumps, delivering strong output force but offering lower precision in handling high-frequency, small-amplitude vibrations. In contrast, the 48V integrated solution offers faster response and finer vibration filtering, though it is limited by lower power output. Each approach has its suitable scenarios, and neither is universally superior. This controversy stems from NIO’s earlier high-profile promotion of its own technical path, which Li Auto challenged through this comparative test. The incident reflects intensifying competition among Chinese EV startups, where self-conducted comparisons under controlled, non-standardized conditions—lacking third-party verification—are increasingly viewed as marketing tactics. NIO itself previously published comparisons against Maybach; now, facing similar tactics, it has raised objections, highlighting a tendency toward impatience within the industry as brands push into the premium segment. In mature global luxury car markets, automakers typically avoid senior executives publicly disparaging competitors, prioritizing brand dignity and decorum. As Chinese EV startups strive to break into the premium market, refining core technologies—such as chassis systems—will ultimately determine their brand elevation. Excessive focus on mutual accusations and media-driven confrontations may obscure deeper strategic shortcomings. Genuine consumer trust is earned through product performance and reputation, not through provocative comparison videos.
