Over the past year, Australia's car imports from China surged by 83% year-on-year, propelling China ahead of Japan to become the country's largest source of imported vehicles. In April this year, Australia imported nearly 36,000 passenger cars from China, surpassing Japan's 29,000 during the same period. In the first four months of this year, Australia imported more than 100,000 vehicles from China. Rising fuel prices have driven local consumers to seek new energy vehicles. In May, new energy and hybrid models accounted for nearly 50% of new car sales in Australia, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) making up 20%. Data from the Port of Melbourne shows that Chinese-made cars' share of total vehicle imports rose from 15% a year ago to 27%, approaching Japan's 30%. During the same period, container throughput at the port hit a record high, with containers originating from China accounting for 52%—ten times that of those from the United States. BYD, one of China’s leading automotive exporters, has become Australia’s second-best-selling car brand, with May sales soaring 155% year-on-year. Recently, BYD’s car carrier vessel “Zhengzhou” arrived at the Port of Melbourne carrying approximately 4,800 vehicles, further boosting market supply.
