On June 19, during the G7 leaders' summit in France, U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney were inadvertently recorded by an open microphone. Carney informed Trump about Canada’s newly implemented import quota system for Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), which allows up to 49,000 Chinese EVs to enter the Canadian market over a 12-month period at a tariff rate of approximately 6%—a volume representing less than 3% of Canada’s total automotive market. Trump responded positively, saying, “That’s fine—I like it.” Previously, Canada had imposed tariffs exceeding 100% on Chinese EVs. In January of this year, Canada officially announced this new trade policy and plans to gradually increase the quota in the future. Meanwhile, Canadian Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly is currently visiting China this week, meeting with representatives from Chinese automakers to discuss enhancing policy exchanges and expanding practical cooperation.
