Tesla’s Cybercab engineering prototype integrates a spray-wash system within the housing of its side-view camera modules, designed to remove contaminants such as rain, snow, mud, and dust from the lenses. In Tesla’s vision-only autonomous driving approach, cameras serve as the sole environmental perception input for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, meaning lens clarity directly impacts system stability. In real-world usage, dirty lenses frequently cause the system to warn of reduced environmental recognition confidence—and in severe cases, even trigger safety protocols that force the vehicle to pull over. Current Tesla owners typically clean camera lenses manually, but driverless taxis—lacking steering wheels and required to operate 24/7—must rely on automated cleaning functions to maintain reliable perception performance. The Cybercab’s spray system precisely targets the side-view camera areas used for lane merging, lane changes, and blind-spot monitoring. Initial observations suggest a similar design may also be applied to rear-facing cameras, creating a comprehensive cleaning system covering all vehicle-mounted visual sensors. Presently, mass-produced vehicles equipped with AI4 hardware generally lack dedicated spray-wash mechanisms for side and rear cameras; only test versions of the autonomous Model Y robotaxi have been retrofitted with such equipment. As Tesla pushes toward large-scale deployment of unsupervised FSD, the limitations of current AI4 vehicles in adverse weather conditions are becoming increasingly apparent. While software optimizations can partially mitigate perception issues, physical lens cleaning remains irreplaceable during heavy rain or muddy road conditions. Industry analysts speculate that future AI4 vehicles may need to incorporate similar spray systems—or upgrade to AI4.5 hardware—to achieve all-weather autonomous driving capabilities comparable to those of the Cybercab.
