Starting in 2025, driven by surging global energy storage demand and tight lithium-ion battery supply, the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries is accelerating significantly. CATL plans to scale up sodium-ion battery deployment in energy storage applications by 2026. EVE Energy has commenced construction of a 2 GWh sodium-ion battery production line, while Ronbay Technology is collaborating with CATL on cathode materials, targeting an annual capacity of 50,000 metric tons by 2026. Companies such as Farasis Energy and SVOLT Energy are also making progress in sodium-ion battery technologies. On the product front, China Sodium Battery Group has launched a large-format 588 Ah cell. Sodium-ion battery energy storage projects have already been implemented in Yunnan and Guangxi provinces, validating their reliability and value in integrating renewable energy. In 2025, China’s sodium-ion battery shipments are expected to reach the gigawatt-hour (GWh) scale, establishing an initial multi-regional, full-scenario demonstration framework. Thanks to superior low-temperature performance, high safety, and significant cost-reduction potential, sodium-ion batteries are transitioning from a “backup option” to a key pillar of the energy system. This shift is further bolstered by supportive government policies aimed at enhancing energy security and strengthening domestic supply chains.
