According to a report on August 19, the BMW XM is facing an uncertain future, primarily due to its underwhelming performance in several key global markets. Launched approximately four years ago, the XM was initially projected by BMW to achieve 23% of its sales volume from China and 26% from the U.S.—making the latter its largest market. However, actual results have fallen short of expectations: global XM deliveries in 2025 totaled just 7,608 units, the lowest among all BMW models, even trailing the discontinued Z4. Sales in the U.S. market amounted to 1,878 units, down 4.9% year-over-year. In the first half of 2026, global XM sales further declined to 2,816 units, a 22.4% drop compared to the same period last year. Under a typical product cycle, the XM should already be undergoing road testing for its mid-cycle refresh. Yet no prototype vehicles or spy photos have surfaced, suggesting BMW may cancel the facelift altogether. Although BMW plans to launch around 40 new or updated models by the end of 2027, the XM stands little chance of receiving a full “Neue Klasse” (New Class) overhaul. To date, BMW has not made any official decision regarding the XM’s future. Additionally, BMW has recently discontinued the Z4 and 8 Series, and the i4 will soon be phased out to make way for the upcoming all-new i3 sedan. Reports also indicate that the unconventional-looking iX SUV could be axed as well, following the introduction of the iX5 and the future iX7. The prospects for the 2 Series Active Tourer multi-purpose vehicle are similarly bleak.
