On September 18, BMW officially released the first official images of the all-new iX5 Hydrogen. Equipped with a third-generation fuel cell system, the vehicle is currently in the latest prototype testing phase and will enter series production at BMW Group’s plant in Steyr, Austria, following successful validation. The new model largely retains the exterior design of the latest BMW X5 and iX5, featuring dynamic digital LED headlights that, for the first time, integrate the daytime running lights and low-beam headlights into a single design unit. Sculpted character lines accentuate the front and rear wheel arches and side skirts, while the rear features a distinctive taillight cluster and a roof-mounted rear spoiler. Current testing efforts are focused on optimizing the interaction between the fuel cell system, high-voltage battery, and electric motor. The vehicle targets a maximum range of 750 km, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 5 seconds, and can be refueled in less than 5 minutes. The BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage System comprises seven high-pressure hydrogen tanks made of carbon fiber-reinforced composite material. These tanks are arranged in parallel within a metal framework, interconnected to form a sealed unit controlled by a central main valve. This storage system is compatible with BMW’s sixth-generation high-voltage battery technology.
