The Beijing Auto Show organizers recently announced that, starting in 2027, the event will shift from being held biennially to annually. Following this adjustment, the Beijing Auto Show will take place each year from March 27 to April 5, while the Shanghai Auto Show will open on April 25 of the same year—marking the first time both major auto shows will be held successively within the same calendar year. The Beijing Auto Show was launched in 1985, and the Shanghai Auto Show began in 1990. Initially, the two events did not directly compete with each other. In 2002, facing competitive pressure from international auto shows, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Automotive Sub-council—the organizer of the Beijing Auto Show—and the Shanghai Council for the Promotion of International Trade reached an agreement to coordinate their exhibition schedules. However, as competition between the two intensified over time, their cooperative relationship gradually deteriorated and was eventually terminated publicly. The Beijing Auto Show’s decision to change its frequency now signals the beginning of direct head-to-head competition between the two major exhibitions.
