Tesla plans to launch the long-wheelbase version of the Model Y (Model Y L) in the North American market in August or September 2024—a firm internal target that could be delayed depending on testing or production progress. The vehicle will be produced at Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas, where production lines are currently being retooled to accommodate the new model. Unpainted body shells of the Model Y L have already been spotted at the Texas factory, and the vehicle began road testing on U.S. roads in April this year, followed recently by calibration work at the Fremont factory test track. The Model Y L debuted in China in summer 2023 and has since been rolled out in Australia, New Zealand, and several other Asian markets. It features a wheelbase extended by 150 mm and an overall length increased by 179 mm compared to the standard Model Y. The vehicle adopts a 2+2+2 six-seat configuration, with the second row consisting of two independent, adjustable captain’s chairs equipped with both heating and ventilation functions. Inside, it includes a 16-inch central touchscreen and a comfort-oriented suspension system. Performance-wise, it is largely consistent with the high-end all-wheel-drive Model Y: the Chinese version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and offers a CLTC-rated range of 751 km—nearly identical to the standard all-wheel-drive variant’s 750 km. In China, the Model Y L has a manufacturer-suggested retail price of RMB 339,000, compared to RMB 313,500 for the base all-wheel-drive version. In the U.S., the current high-end all-wheel-drive Model Y is priced at $49,900, and the Model Y L is expected to be priced around $53,990—lower than the Performance variant’s $57,990. The Model Y L has already received EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval and is expected to enter the European market shortly after its North American launch.
