On November 4, OpenAI announced progress in AI-assisted physical product development, showcasing the application of GPT-6Astra in collaborative design across mechanical, electrical, and software domains, and announced a research collaboration with Mazda to use the model for automotive design and simulation evaluation. OpenAI said two team members, working in their spare time, used Astra to complete the design of a test device capable of interacting with Codex in under a week. The model handled appearance, enclosure structure, electronic component selection, circuit board layout, and firmware generation, after which a contract manufacturer produced a small batch of prototypes in under a month. OpenAI noted that barriers remain between design and manufacturing, as the model did not always fully account for production constraints, dimensional tolerances, and assembly details, and production readiness still requires multiple rounds of review and iteration. In the automotive sector, OpenAI is collaborating with Mazda's aerodynamics and crash safety engineers, using airflow and structural simulations to explore new vehicle designs. Meanwhile, OpenAI has expanded its partnership with Chip Ganassi Racing to test converting 3D scan data of parts into editable CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings, addressing the issue of missing original design files.
