Mercedes-Benz Unveils R&D Plan for In-Car Displays with Display Elements Embedded in Window Glass

Recently, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an in-vehicle display R&D program that embeds display elements directly into window glass. The program includes two major technical approaches. The first is glass-embedded LED display, which laminates and integrates MiniLED and MicroLED elements inside the composite window material, with the rear window as the primary application scenario. When active, it can project triangular warning signs, safety prompts, traffic reminders and other information onto the rear window, enabling information exchange with following vehicles and road participants, with side windows reserved for expansion potential. MiniLED is used for large areas of the rear window, while MicroLED is used to display fine animated graphics. The other is a windshield projection system based on HOE holographic optical elements. A projector built into the dashboard directs light onto the windshield, and a transparent film in the interlayer selectively reflects light beams of corresponding wavelengths. The system features viewing-angle isolation, allowing a single windshield to carry two independent images: the driver's side displays speed, navigation and road-condition warnings, while the passenger side can independently watch videos, view point-of-interest introductions or make video calls. Holographic images are activated on demand, and the windshield remains conventionally transparent when no content is displayed. The entire technology is currently in the R&D stage. Mercedes-Benz has not announced a timeline for mass-production installation, nor disclosed costs, durability or repair solutions. Once laminated glass with electronic components is damaged, replacement costs are higher than for ordinary windows, and the content displayed externally on the rear window needs to comply with the road traffic regulations of each country.
